Amigos de los Ríos transformed Mary W. Jackson Elementary's schoolyard by removing 21,000 square feet of asphalt and concrete to reduce the heat island effect and improve stormwater management. The project installed pervious pavement, bioretention planters, and bioswales alongside five outdoor classrooms built from boulders and recycled urban lumber. The team planted 36 new trees and 600 native shrubs, created nature-based play areas, and enhanced ADA accessibility throughout. A phase two Safe Clean Water Project will address stormwater challenges in the surrounding streets. Funded by the California Natural Resources Agency's Urban Greening Grant Program, the Disney Foundation, California ReLeaf, and LA County's Safe Clean Water Program.
