A green community hub in El Monte.

Installed in 2016, the transformation of the Jeff Seymour Family Center into a model green campus was led by Amigos de los Ríos and made possible with funding from the CalFire Urban and Community Forestry program and REI.

The Center is managed by the El Monte City School District (EMCSD) as a community hub for families in El Monte, providing comprehensive programs to promote family wellness. Over a dozen community organizations occupy former classrooms, including a food bank, a free dental clinic, a college access program, and ActiveSGV's bike center. Campus green infrastructure improvements include CA native plantings, rain gardens, bioswales, and expanded tree canopy — creating a welcoming, sustainable outdoor space for students, families, and the surrounding community.

The site is also home to the region's first 'traffic garden' and a community bike park featuring multiple pump tracks and skills elements for riders of all abilities, thanks to a collaboration among ActiveSGV, Amigos de los Rios, and EMCSD during the project's design phase. Public access to the site is available after school hours on weekdays (3pm-dusk) and on weekends, pursuant to a joint-use agreement with the City of El Monte. More information about the project here.
